Father of twin babies alleging misbehaviour, negligence by SKIMS doctors stages protest

SRINAGAR: The father of twin kids from Bemina area of Srinagar on Monday held a protest demonstration here against doctors of SKIMS Soura for allegedly misbehaving with attendants of patients. He also accused the medicos of being negligent towards the patients.
Tanveer Ahmad Khan, father of 11-month-twins arrived at press colony and staged protest. He said on Wednesday, June 26, his kids ate some poisonous substance at home and he immediately took them to JVC hospital around 5pm.
“The doctors diagnosed the kids and referred them to SKIMS Soura for better treatment as their condition was critical. I along with family members took my personal vehicle and we reached Soura at around 6:30 pm,” he said. “As I got two emergency tickets for treatment, the doctors in the ward were busy with their mobile phones. I requested them to do an emergency treatment for my kids as they have eaten some poisonous substance. They referred the kids to Ward 3 in the hospital.”
Khan said the doctors present in Ward 3 told him that “this is not our case and it has been referred to the emergency ward”. “After that, I visited back to the emergency ward and requested doctors to see the kids but they didn’t show any interest and started misbehaving with my cousin brothers,” Khan said.
He said his three cousin brothers were then called by doctors in the control room. “As they entered the control room, more than a dozen doctors also entered and locked the door. They started beating my cousin, forcing us to call the police station Soura who after coming to hospital registered a complaint report against doctors,” he said.
Khan further said the doctors didn’t give any kind of treatment to his kids. “I then took them to G P Pant hospital and they were admitted there the same day. They are still admitted in the hospital and their condition is now better,” he said.
When contacted, Medical Superintendent SKIMS Soura, Doctor Farooq Jan said the family had come to Paediatric Emergency SKIMS with the case of ingestion of caustic soda.
“The doctors referred the two kids to Ward 3 for treatment. The children were seen by doctors on duty (Paediatrics) and the parents were told to admit the patients in the hospital. Further, advice for consultation from Gastroenterology was sought. The doctors on duty there advised to admit the patients under Paediatrics. No active intervention was needed. While the formalities were being made for admission, the attendants got angry and started altercation with doctors on duty in Paediatrics asking why no active intervention was being done,” he said.
“It is important that endoscopy in such a setting is contraindicated as it can lead to serious complications,” Jan said. “We have registered a case in this regard in the concerned police station, and I have handed over the incident to the concerned Head of Department (HOD) to investigate the matter.”
