Party workers fight for candidates at NC convention in Baramulla

Baramulla: A day-long convention of National Conference in Baramulla was disturbed as two groups of party workers exchanged heated words and slogans to press for mandate to their favoured candidates.
Witnesses that as senior leaders of the party began to address the convention, party workers started chanting slogans in favours of their respective candidates.
One group was supporting a former bureaucrat Tariq Ahmad Kakroo while another supported Gulam Hasan Rahi, a party leader who lost the previous election to a PDP candidate.
Supporters of Kakroo said the party president Farooq Abdullah had assured Kakroo would be the next candidate of the party for Baramulla assembly constituency, while the other group said that Rahi was a better candidate.
“It is the first chance when a strong leader wants to join the party and Dr Farooq also assured us that Kakroo will be next candidate, however, some people who are enemy of our party are not in his support,” Kakroo’s supporter said.
“We came here to announce it publicly that we will not accept any other person,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a worker said.
Party leaders Abdul Rahim Rather, Nasir Aslam Wani and Ali Mohammad Sagar were at the convention when it was disturbed by the infighting.
Talking to media Nasir Aslam said that it was a good sign that people are fighting for mandate.
“It is a democracy and everyone has his own rights, we came here to check the position and to prepare people for next elections. If people are fighting for mandate it means more and more people are joining our party,” Nasir said.
NC General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said that, the party has not decided on the candidate yet.
“We will ask our grass root level workers, but the final decision is in the hands of our party president,” Sagar said.
