Shopian driver hailed for returning lost bag to tourists

SHOPIAN: A cab driver from Shopian has become popular on social media and has been hailed widely, for returning a lost bag containing large amount of cash and golden ornaments to a tourist family.
Tariq Ahmad Naikoo, a resident of resident of Bonbazar area makes a living by working as a cab driver.
Tariq told Kashmir Reader that he had gone to Aharbal ferrying some passengers and found a bag containing valuables while strolling near waterfall.
“I found a bag near the waterfall, as I opened it, I found mobile phones, cash, golden ornaments and purses in the bag worth Rs 10 lac,” he said, adding that the mobile phones were “high ended” but he managed to switch on one of them.
After some time he received a call on the same mobile phone and the person on the other end was inquiring about the bag for which he told him to meet him in park.
Within an hour, the tourists reached the spot and he handed the bag to them in presence of many locals and tourists.
The incident, according to Tariq, took place last Friday and since then he is receiving calls with people praising him for the act.
Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Owais Ahmad on Sunday called Tariq to his office to felicitate him. He was given a gift and a letter of appreciation from the deputy commissioner.
Tariq lives in an old house along with his elderly mother, daughter and wife.
“Every possible help will be provided to the Tariq as he chose honesty instead of greed,” Deputy Commissioner said.
Tariq’s act of honesty has been reported by many major media outlets in India.
