Protests against NHPC in Uri for not providing fire tender

Baramulla: Residents of Salambad village in border town Uri held a protest Tuesday against National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) officials for not providing a fire tender to douse fire at a shop on Monday night in the area.
Protesting residents blocked the Srinagar-Muzafarabad road near Salambad for several hours. They said that fire broke out in a shop in midnight and people approached nearby NHPC office for a fire tender, which they denied.
The protestors said that NHPC has a duty to provide people the fire tender because “they are using” their “lands, roads, water and other things”. It is their (NHPCs) responsibility to help locals in need, they said.
Later, a team of police reached the spot and assured protestors that they would take up the matter with higher officials of the corporation.
