Asiya-Neelofar anniversary: Geelani calls for shutdown in Shopian

SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani has made a fervent appeal to people to observe a complete shutdown in Shopian and its peripheral areas to commemorate the gruesome incident of rape and murder of Asiya and Neelofer in 2009.
Geelani in a statement said Jammu and Kashmir being a heavily deployed militarised zone in the world has become the most vulnerable place to protect life, honour and chastity of women.
Recalling the painful incident, Hurriyat (G) chairman termed it a heinous crime against humanity and expressed dismay on what he termed as dubious and malicious role played by law enforcement agencies and legal authorities with regard to “making vain efforts to trample down the eyewitnesses and other credentials of this case”.
While demanding a high level probe by United Nations Human Rights Commission, the pro-freedom leader said the twin rape and murder was committed in a broad-daylight but culprits are still at large, which speaks volumes about the Indian designs to use rape of women as a war strategy.
