Spring believed to have healing powers on verge on death in Shopian

SHOPIAN: A spring at Nadpora village of Shopian district is about to disappear due to pollution and lack of maintenance.
Local said the spring has special significance as its water is said to heal cysts on skin. The spring sees a number of visitors from different areas, who take along some mud from the spring to apply on the body cysts.
The spring is situated along the Shopian-Keller Road and is surrounded by apple orchards and residential houses. It oozes small quantity of water.
Locals said using the mud of the spring as an ointment was a decades’ old custom.
“We see many people come to this spring and take mud which they later apply on cysts,” a local resident said.
Another local, Ghulam Muhammad, said that most of the visitors come on Sundays “due to unknown reasons”.
“People from nearby areas come before dawn and take mud but people from faraway arrive in the day,” he said.
“Applying the spring mud on cysts gives some pain but in many cases the cysts disappear after using mud once or twice,” Muhammad added.
Locals said government should help to preserve the spring.
“This site has been filled with trash and waste and its present condition depicts that it will soon disappear if steps were not taken to preserve it,” Muhammad Saleem, another resident said.
