During my childhood, I used to watch movies on Doordarshan Kashmir. The movie was telecast once in a week. That was the time to rejoice and cheer. The viewership of the channel used to blossom during these two hours. Rest the content broadcasted remained a mystery. The random Kashmiri dramas, the half baked promotion of social fabric and culture dominated on DD Kashmir. Whatever they telecast, the purpose remained unfilled. Due to the advent of technological escalation, the channel lost this viewership also. This tragedy exists to date.
Koshur KBC (Koshur Kaun Banega Crorepati) is a new sensational game show aired on DD Kashmir. It is engineered on the lines of Kaun Banega Crorepati, an Indian television show based on the British program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. The concept is contemporary. It has been able to garner more and more viewers for the abandoned DD Kashmir. It is sarcastic in nature and the TRP has touched the skies in a blink of the eye. This is great. Our Koshur channel (as it is commonly called) is being revamped and reformed. It is being watched relentlessly. The only reason being the airing of Kaun Banega Koshur Crorepati. This side , all is well and good.
Let’s put a pause on this part of the story. We need to focus on all angles. Except for the title, there seems nothing Koshur in the game show. The Kashmiri language used in the game show miserably fails to bring out the Koshur sentiment. The content and the title utterly mismatch the ambiance. The Sarcasm is deadly futile. The game show is a complete replica of Kaun Banega Crorepati without having anything fresh to be adorned. The audience can be seen cheering and clapping for even the participants who even don’t know the basic syntax of Kashmiri parlance. The Kashmiri dialect and vocabulary lacks enthusiasm. The legacy of DD Kashmir has been a broken one. It will be undone by this game show. But in between the process, the purpose of the channel is lost. The rationale and ethical commitments are lost. The channel will have the highest viewership only for two hours during which this show will be telecasted. The other content is rarely watched by anyone. The desertion will be restored again. The rejection of content by the Kashmiri audience will continue to remain as the legacy of DD Koshur. Instead, the channel badly needs to propagate our culture, our legacy, our dialect, our traditions, our way of life. That is the real purpose and logical practice. Otherwise, if you will neglect the basic purpose, how will you nail the truth?
The Koshur KBC has proved to be a metaphor of advocacy journalism wrapped in a sensational setting. The host of the game show transforms into a spin doctor. The Koshur Channel is our voice, our only medium of expression. It has promoted our social fabric on a number of occasions no doubt. But what is needed is a complete healthy reformation. It needs to act as a medium to highlight the issues that have a positive impact on society. That can avert the
“Broadcast Tragedies”. These are the ethical principles that can be sowed and fruitful results harvested. To ignite a wrong flame in the darkness, we can’t enlighten society. We can only hope and hope. Nothing less. Nothing more.
