Army searching woods near Lolab valley after brief encounter

Kupwara: A search operation was launched by government forces on Thursday in forested Kandi area of frontier district Kupwara following a gunfight between militants and army.
Official sources said that the search operation was launched by army’s 47 RR and 28 RR in Kandi area that is adjacent to the Lolab valley. They said that during a search operation conducted earlier in the day by the army, militants hiding in the woods had fired on the army team, resulting in an exchange of gunfire which continued for some time.
An army officer said that there was no casualty on the army’s side and the situation on the other side could not be confirmed.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara AS Dinkar said that the search operation was still continuing in the area.
“A brief exchange of gunfire happened between army and militants in the area today in the morning, after militants fired upon an army ambush party. Since that time, the search operation is continuing,” the SSP said.
