Commuters fume as protesters block vital roads in Alamgari Bazar and Saida Kadal

Srinagar: Absolute chaos was witnessed in parts of Srinagar city on Thursday as the vital roads connecting parts of the downtown Srinagar with the peripheral areas were blocked by protesters seeking justice for a minor rape victim.

Witnesses said that the Hazaratbal-Saida Kadal-Rainawari road was blocked by the protesters and no vehicular movement was allowed.

The road is critical as it leads to the University of Kashmir. Protesters had assembled at Ranger Stop and blocked the road with wooden logs.

Many students were seen walking all along the stretch of more than 3 kilometers from Rainawari to Hazratbal.

However, later a team of police led by SHO Nigeen reached the spot and cleared the road for vehicular traffic.

Speaking to Kashmir Reader, the SHO said that the protesters had blocked the road to hold a peaceful protest demonstration. However, he said, the police immediately managed to make the road through for traffic.

Similarly, the Nowshera-Alamgari Bazar-Hawal road was blocked by the protesters at Alamgari Bazar.

The road connects the downtown and uptown parts of Srinagar with the important health facility SKIMS Soura.

The protesters had assembled at several places including at Zadibal, Alamgari Bazar, the interiors of Hawal and did not let any vehicle cross the road.

A patient traveling from Natipora area of uptown Srinagar walked all the way from Hawal chowk to SKIMS for treatment.

The blockage of two vital road stretches caused trouble to the commuters.
