Sells land, house to pay for charges on fake lottery
Kupwara: A family from frontier district Kupwara has lost their land and house after being conned into paying Rs 23 lakh by a fraudster caller claming to be associated with television game show Koun Banega Crorepati.
Abdul Majeed, a resident of Goose village of district Kupwara said in December his son Rafiq Ahmad received a WhatsApp phone call from an unknown caller who told him that his number has been selected as a lottery winner on the famous TV show Koun Banega Crorepati, and that he has won a Mercedes car and Rs 50 lakh in cash. The caller however told him not to disclose it to others.
Rafiq told his father, Majid, after which both were in touch with the caller for some time. After some days the caller told them to deposit Rs 16000 in a particular account as tax charges, and they did so. Over time the caller repeated instructions to deposit cash in vatrious accounts, on pretext of charges, for the prize amount.
“Days passed in weeks and weeks in months and the caller was in our touch and we sold our five kanal land, a single story house and other goods and credited rupees 23 lakh but not received a single rupee.”
Majeed said that from past few days the caller was not receiving the calls and they discussed the issue with a friend, who told them that it was a fraud and a fake caller looting people in the name of such programs.
Rafiq said the caller, right in the beginning, told him not to share the news with anyone, including police, as they would demand tax and other charges.
“He (caller) has lot of motivation power and he not only motivated me, he motivated my father and we follow what he told us in past months after the first call.”
Majeed is now appealing government and police to help the family in nabbing and arresting the fraudster so that he will return their money.
Majeed has five children including two disabled minor daughters and has been left without house and land. He appealed governor to help the family otherwise they can not live.
