Police detain school principal, appeal to people for peace

Bandipora: Appealing to people to not indulge in violence and assuring “fool-proof investigation” into the rape of the three-year-old Sumbal girl, the police on Monday said they had detained the school principal who had issued a certificate showing the age of the rape accused as a minor.
A photo of the school certificate had gone viral on social media and had drawn massive public outrage.
Superintendent of Police Bandipora Rahul Malik said the school principal who had issued the certificate was being questioned in police custody.
“Besides taking care of the law and order issues, our teams have also scoured the crime spot,” he said, adding that samples and other material required for forensic analysis and by doctors have been gathered.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the heinous crime against the minor girl, the accused being a neighbourhood youth.
DIG North Kashmir Mohammad Suleiman Choudhary said that the SIT comprising senior officers is collecting every bit of detail to ensure fool-proof investigations.
“People should have faith in us,” he told reporters here.
Choudhary also said that the school certificate showing the age of the accused as a minor had been found to be fake. “The school principal is under detention as the certificate was found fake,” he said.
“I appeal to people to not indulge in violence as the investigation will be fool-proof,” he said.
