In yet another case of sexual predation that has jarred and hit Kashmir, a three year old has become victim to the predatory perversion of someone who does not deserve to be called human. Cases like these were unheard of in Kashmir but perhaps they always happened beyond the glare of the media. Whatever be the case and the truth, that these abominable and dastardly cum beastly things are happening in Kashmir calls for both introspection and review of a serious nature at multiple levels of society. First, a word on the nature of this abominable crime, an abhorrent incident that cannot and should not be seen in isolation from other crimes in society. The rape of the 3 year old can only be committed by a person whose perversions know no bounds. These perversions border on psychological and psycho emotional illnesses which makes persons thus inclined commit these odious and despicable crimes. The first lesson that society must then draw is there are individuals within that are ill and that this mental illness must be dealt with. Second is that society must develop and generate both recognition and awareness of sexual predation that goes under the name of pedophilia where young children( at times, even toddlers) are victimized by sexual predators who are usually people known to the victims and trusted by them. Our children must be educated and made aware about advances of a sexual nature and God forbid, if and when something of this nature happens, they must be encouraged to articulate their suffering at the hands of pedophiles and other assorted perverted predators. The issue and the solution then is multipronged: one is the need for recognition by society that a problem of this nature exists in society. That is, there are deranged and sick individuals in society whose acts of predation make victims of the young and the tender. Perhaps the only way that these deranged persons can be prevented from victimizing the young and the innocent is by identifying them and also raising awareness in society about the issue and problem of pedophilia and its perpetrators. Last, but not the least, if and when a child has become victim of this odious crime, then he or she must immediately be counseled by experts and all efforts should be made to render his or her life easier so that he does not become double victim , one of the incident itself and the other of mental and emotional scarring. In terms of the specific case in contention, all efforts must be made to give the guilty the most stringest punishment, the kind that has a demonstrably deterrent effect!
