KEA protests toll tax on highway commuters

SRINAGAR: Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) held a protest demonstration here Saturday against government’s decision to impose toll tax on all types of vehicles plying on Srinagar-Jammu highway.
The members of KEA assembled here in Press Enclave chanting slogans like “revocation of toll tax” , “we want justice”, and ” total tax will affect our business”.
The protesters said that the government was doing injustice with the people of Kashmir.
Co-chairman KEA, Farooq Ahmad Dar said that National Highways Authority Of India (NHAI) has installed toll plaza in three places of Srinagar- Jammu Highway.
“The toll is being collected by National Highways Authority Of India (NHAI) which is totally injustice with the transporters and business community of Kashmir.
“The toll tax plaza was also installed In Jammu, Kathua and Samba but after Dr Jitendar Singh interfered into the issue, these toll taxes has been removed from these places,” Dar said.
He added that after GST was implemented in the state especially the business community in Kashmir has been worstaffected.
The protesters said that if the order was not revoked, the transporters will increase the fare, which will become burden on poor people.
The KEA requested Governor Satya Paul Malik to look into the matter and ensure revocation of the toll tax, so the people of Kashmir do not suffer.
