Sopore militant killed in Shopian

SHOPIAN: A militant affiliated with ISJK was killed in a pre-dawn brief shoot out at Jamnagri village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The slain militant was identified as Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi resident of Sopore area of northern Kashmir.
The gunfight was the first in Ramadan this year, which began on May 7.
Earlier on May 3, three militants including Hizb top commander were killed in Malibug Shopian.
Last year New Delhi had announced a ceasefire during Ramadan to which the militants did not agree.
Police source said that a joint team of government forces including 23 Para of Army, Police’s special operation group (SOG) and central reserve police force launched cordon and search operation in the area.
During the cordon hiding militants fired upon forces resulting in a brief exchange of fire, during which one militant was killed, they said.
Locals said that at the time of Sehri (pre-dawn), they heard gunshots for about five minutes followed by a sound of explosion. Another local said that soon after the exchange of fire minor clashes between government forces and protesters took place, however, there were no reports of any injuries from either side.
The body of slain militant, locals said, was retrieved from an orchard some 200 meters from residential houses.
A complete shutdown was observed in the district and internet services were also snapped by authorities in the morning.
Also in his native Sopore area a partial shutdown was observed. Also the district magistrate announced on Friday morning that all schools and colleges will remain closed in sub division Sopore.
There was some panic in the morning when school buses full of kids began returning instead of going towards schools.
Locals said that most shopkeepers in Sopore town did not open their shops and other business centres also remained closed during the day.
Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi was a resident of Model Town Sopore and had joined militant ranks in 2015. He joined the ISJK in 2016 and was on the hit list of government forces.
Ishfaq had escaped in many encounters in the past as per local sources. The body of militant Ishfaq Ahmad reached his home model town Sopore in the evening.
