Polling staff taken to station in helicopter

SHOPIAN: Polling staff was ferried in a helicopter on Sunday to polling stations established in Wachi assembly segment in Shopian district. The third phase of voting for the Anantnag parliamentary constituency is to be held on Monday in Shopian and Pulwama districts.
In Shopian district, most of the polling staff deputed at the 24 stations in Wachi assembly segment was airlifted to their destinations. Sources told Kashmir Reader that 39 polling staffers were airlifted to locations from the district police lines in a chopper. They said that some of the staff members were called and told that they will be dropped to their stations in a chopper.
Ferrying polling staff in a chopper is being considered as the first-ever move in an election in Kashmir.
District Election Officer Shopian Owais Ahmad denied having airlifted polling staff, but said that such an option is available.
“We have an option in place to airlift the polling staff but we didn’t use that option. Once we use it, we will confirm it to you,” he said.
In Shopian district, 245 polling stations have been established at 133 locations and all of them have been designated as “hyper-sensitive” by the government’s security agencies.
