Mirwaiz asks Islamic scholars to speak about women’s inheritance, domestic violence

Srinagar: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday asked the Islamic jurists and orators to speak about the issues of women’s inheritance and domestic violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Last year about 1700-2000 issues related to women were reported, of which most of them were related to domestic violence triggered by dowry related issues. These has to be addressed because women are the important part of our life, also because there is no Islamic tradition of ours that allows it to happen,” Mirwaiz said.
He made these remarks on the Itabali Ramadan event (arrival of Ramazan) that was attended by Mutahida Majlisi Ulama, a conglomerate of various schools of thought, at Miwaiz Manzil in downtown. Mirwaiz said that Kashmir is facing with domestic violence issue at an alarming scale which need to be addressed in Friday sermons.
“We have huge gatherings of Muslims during Ramadan and we must utilise this to spread a message that can help to prevent domestic violence. This issue has eaten our society which we witness on day to day basis,” he said.
The meeting was attended by representatives of various Sunni, and Shia sects, whose representative too spoke on the occasion.
Mirwaiz also said that issues related to inheritance are also seeped here. Women don’t get their share of property is what is being faced too, he said.
“So we must stand up, speak, and begin the process of their reversal. It it better for us,” he added.
