Hajin farmers protest irrigation water shortage

Hajin: The residents of Hajin area in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Saturday staged a protest complaining acute water shortage for irrigation purposes.
The residents blocked Hajin–Sopore road and staged a protest against the irrigation and flood control department which ‘failed’ to make the pump stations functional in the area.
“The agriculture season has already begun and the pump station located at BoniKhan has not been started yet causing us immense problems,” one of the protesters, Farooq Ahmad, said.
Another protestor said that they have already informed the Tehsildar regarding the water shortage in the area. “But nothing concrete has been done so far causing us mental torture as agriculture is our back bone on which we are sustaining our livelihood,” he said.
He said a bulldozer is needed for a few hours for dredging near the pump station so that it can lift the water to irrigate the fields.
“We are not able to sow the paddy seeds as there is no water in the fields,” the protesters said.
The farmers appealed the deputy commissioner Bandipora to look into the matter as early as possible.
Meanwhile, SHO Hajin Muneeb ul Islam rushed to the spot and assured the farmers that the pump station would be make functional soon.
When contacted, deputy commissioner Bandipora Shahbaz Mirza said that he will personally look into the matter and directed the concerned to examine the problems faced by farmers in the area.
