SRINAGAR: The casual labourers of tourism department on Wednesday held a protest demonstration here demanding release of their long-pending wages.
Scores of casual labourers assembled at TRC premises of the department, chanting slogans in favour of their demands.
The protesters said that the department has not released their wages since July 2014.
They said that they are working in the department as casual labourers from the last 15 years. “We are performing our duties regularly and are without wages from the last five years,” the protesting casual labourers said, adding, “we are demanding to release our pending wages.”
Fayaz Ahmad Dar who is president of the tourism department casual labourers union, said that there are around 350 labourers working with the tourism department. “Only 14 casual labourers are being paid continuously while rest are suffering,” he said.
He said that they have approached the concerned authorities from time to time, but “nothing has been done so far”.
“We are facing hardships in our daily lives, as we are unable to take care of our families. Despite working hard for the department, no attention has been paid towards our earned wages,” Dar said.
“Even two orders directing release of wages was issued on October 24, 2018, and another order was issued on January 1, 2019, but nothing has been done on ground,” he added.
