Anxious Mehbooba quickly begins poll campaign in Pulwama

Anantnag: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) workers led by their president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday held a protest rally in restive Pulwama town against the detention of JKLF chief Yasin Malik and the suspension of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad trade link across the Line of Control (LoC).
Dozens of PDP workers took out the rally from Town Hall Pulwama to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, shouting slogans. The rally marked the beginning of the PDP’s poll campaign for the next two phases of Lok Sabha polls for the Anantnag seat.
The first phase on April 23 did not go well for Mehbooba Mufti, who is contesting for the seat, with even her hometown Bijbehara as well as her last held assembly segment, Anantnag, voting in minuscule numbers.
The dismal voting has seriously dented her chances to win the seat.
In Pulwama today, Mehbooba talked to reporters after the protest rally and expressed anger at the continuous detention of Yasin Malik.
“He is battling bad health in detention and we demand that he should be released immediately,” Mehbooba said.
She added that an atmosphere of fear was being created by first banning the Jama’at-e-Islami and then the JKLF.
“Also, the LoC trade has been suspended, youth are being arrested, families of militants are being harassed and the bodies of militants are being mutilated at encounter sites,” she said, adding that she and her workers had come out to protest against all these.
She took forward her poll campaign in Anantnag and reiterated the same assertions about Articles 370 and 35A, calling them the link between India and Jammu and Kashmir.
