Family of Rawalpora youth demand investigation into his death

Srinagar: The family and relatives of a youth who died in mysterious circumstances on Sunday are demanding investigation into the death and stern action against culprits.
Umar Ahmad Bhat, son of Late Ghulam Muhammad Bhat, a resident of Astanpora Rawalpora Srinagar, left home on Sunday at 9am to attend a function at Tagore Hall, his family said.
Umar’s maternal uncle, Shahid Ahmad Shah said that he had been found lying unconscious near link road Wanbal, wherefrom he was taken to Star Hospital by some people. He said that Umar’s cousin Waseem Ahmad Bhat received a call from some persons- one of whom was a friend of Umar- telling him that Umar is in critical condition at Star Hospital and is being referred to SMHS.
“When the hospital vehicle carrying Umar reached near Amar Singh College, his friend fled from the vehicle during a traffic jam,” Shah said. “We were not present in the vehicle, when Umer was shifted. We have heard it from the Star Hospital staff, who were present in the vehicle.”
“Nearly at 11:30am on Sunday, I received call from SMHS hospital. At that time I was in Lal Chowk, they told me that Umar is critical. Within 10 to 15 minutes, I reached hospital, but he had breathed his last,” he added.
Family sources said that Umar, an orphan, was the only bread earner and caretaker for his mother.
An official from Police Station Shergari said proceedings have been started under section 174 CrPc.
A postmortem on the body has already been conducted, he said.
