Hajin: The residents of Hajin town in Bandipora on Friday voluntarily initiated a cleanliness drive after being constantly overlooked by the municipal authorities.
“We joined hands and together started mega cleanliness drive at Sayed Mohalla by removing mounds of littered garbage from the surroundings and from inside the irrigation canals,” the locals said.
They said the step was vital given the season for farming and the need for fresh water.
“The main aim of the cleanliness drive is too keep the water canal pure as the season of sowing summer crops is approaching,” said Mohammad Afzal, a resident.
He said a large quantity of garbage in the shape of polythene and other hazardous materials were blocking the canals.
Expressing dismay and anger over the administration’s “failure and callous approach” towards the farmers on which their livelihood is solely dependent, Aqib Akbar, a university student said, “It is unfortunate that despite Hajin being a town, we still have to clean the water canal by ourselves. We had requested authorities several times to clean the canals but to no avail. Their non-serious attitude forced us to initiate the cleanliness drive”, University student and volunteer said.
Besides, the locals and volunteers have urged Hajin residents not to dump garbage and domestic waste into streams and in open.
When contacted, the Works Manager Municipal Committee Hajin Khursheed Ahmad said, “We have received the application from people. We have deputed 13 sweepers for cleanliness drive who will also participate in the drive.”
