Anantnag Suspected militants hurled a hand grenade at the house of a National Conference (NC) leader in Tral area of Pulwama district on Tuesday, but caused no damage whatsoever. The NC leader was hosting at his house a closeddoor meeting of the party for the Lok Sabha elections.
NC’s candidate for Anantnag Lok Sabha seat, Hasnain Masoodi, was also part of the meeting. The attack took place at about noon on Tuesday in “upper” Tral area of the main town. A police source confirmed the incident and told Kashmir Reader that the hand grenade exploded outside the premises of the house. “The explosion caused panic in the area but fortunately no damage was caused,” the police source said, adding that the area was cordoned off following the explosion to try and nab the attackers.
Following the grenade attack, former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter to express concern. “Very sorry to hear about a grenade attack on NC’s Anantnag Parliamentary candidate. Relieved to know that he is safe and no other casualties or damage was reported,” Mufti, who is contesting against Masoodi, wrote on Twitter.
Omar Abdullah, the NC vice-president and also a former chief minister, was quick to react and thanked Mehbooba for showing concern. “Thank you for your concern. Allah was kind, thankfully the program had concluded and Masoodi Sahib and other colleagues were in a nearby home when the grenade fell,” Omar wrote on Twitter.
