Bijbehara: Local youths in Sirhama village near Bijbehara on Monday attacked with stones the cavalcade of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, leaving a driver of one of the vehicles injured.
Mehbooba was on her way to Bijbehara after visiting a Dargah in Khiram area when the incident took place. She has been touring parts of Anantnag district in the build-up to Lok Sabha polls for the south Kashmir seat, from where she is contesting.
A senior police officer said that the cavalcade was attacked by some miscreants near Sirhama and a vehicle, part of the cavalcade, suffered some damage.
“The PDP president escaped unhurt but the driver of the vehicle that suffered damage sustained minor injuries,” he said, adding that the injured driver was immediately evacuated to hospital and the miscreants were chased away by the deployed forces in the area.
Local sources told Kashmir Reader that a cordon and search operation was launched in the area to try and nab the attackers.
There were no reports as yet if anyone had been arrested.
Later, during her speech in Bijbehara, Mehbooba shared the news of the attack with her party workers.
