Handwara: Scores of people staged a protest on Friday against the killing of a 7th-classstudent in firing by government forces on Thursday evening in Mandigam area of Handwara.

Eyewitness said that thousands of people visited the home of slain student, Owais Ahmad Mir son of Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, to offer condolences on Friday. Owais was killed in firing by government on Thursday after according to police, some people pelted stones on polling staff. Locals said the boy was killed without any provocation. They demanded investigation into the circumstances in which the boy was killed.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in Mandigam and nearby Kralgund on Friday. On Thursday clashes broke out between people and government forces in several areas of north Kashmir after voting for the parliament elections ended. Owais was killed during clashes in Mandigam Handwara while two minors and a woman were injured in forces action in Palhalan area of Baramulla district.
