SRINAGAR: The J&K High Court on Thursday allowed political parties to use playgrounds and the Indoor Stadium Complex for election-related activities, including public meetings of candidates and election staff training from April 14 to 16.
The fresh petition was moved by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar before Court seeking accord of sanction to various political parties to use playgrounds for election-related activities.
The petitioner pleaded that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced General Elections, 2019, of District Srinagar, which is scheduled to go for polls on 18 April, 2019. In this regard, frequent requests are being received from various political parties for permission to hold election-related meetings in Indoor Stadium Complex, Srinagar. Apart from this, a number of premises have been requisitioned for election-related work, as per the ECI guidelines.
The petition, while giving reference to a judgement passed by the Division Bench of the High Court at Jammu wing, in application no. 09/2017 in PIL no. 20/2014 titled Shambu Nath and Another Vs State of J&K & others, wherein permission was granted for organising Dusshera festival and Independence and Republic Day celebrations in playgrounds.
The court, after allowing the petition, observed that “in view of the submissions, we are inclined to accept the prayer for interim orders”.
“We therefore hereby permit conducting of public meetings of political candidates as well as training of election staff between 14 to 16 April, 2019 in the Indoor Sports Stadium, Srinagar and allow the writ petitioner to consider the applications for the same,” the court directed.
