The world is moving toward a technological frontier where older paradigms and uses of technology become obsolete and redundant by the day. But, here in Kashmir, we are not only stuck in dated paradigms but also internet shutdowns render it almost impossible for adoption of technology that could make day to day lives easier. One such instance is that of apps in the domain of medicine which would have eased the hardships of many people. But, nay, these apparently can’t be taken up here because there is no seamless internet connectivity in Kashmir. As a result, online medicine ordering apps have given up on prospects of business in Jammu and Kashmir due to the frequent internet blockade imposed by the government, among other reasons. At present there are innumerable online medical and other apps across the world which provide home delivery of medicines through websites and apps. However, no such app is functional in J&K as internet shutdowns have created a serious hurdle in online businesses. This flies in the face of developments elsewhere in the world where the gradual but inexorable acceptance , take off and usage of technology and e commerce thereof has led to the creation of what is called the “gig economy”. Be it taxi operators like Ola, Uber, or even delivery of medical users virtually, to the extent these can be delivered and so on, these varied businesses run on apps and platforms thereby creating a dynamic wherein technology is central. The examples cited here have now become so commoditized that the world is moving to frontier technologies like Artificial Intelligence(AI) and robotics. The merits and demerits of these frontier technologies is not in contention here; the issue is that Kashmir is actually disconnected from these trends and developments which are becoming commonplace elsewhere. The difficulties in not being able to use medical apps emblematize the problem. This is a larger problem whose consequences are yet to actually pan out given that in terms of technology Kashmir will not only lag behind but will be a dinosaur, so to speak. Key for the region to tap into technological developments that are happening at a staggering pace in and across the world is seamless internet connectivity. If this does not happen then not only the region’s growth will be stunted but also people will not be able to avail the benefits of technology as in the case of the non use of online medical apps.
