Shopian: Two Kashmiri militants including a Masters in Technology student inducted in militant ranks three days ago were killed in a brief shootout in Shopian’s Imam Sahib in south Kashmir on Saturday.
Sources said that a cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched on Saturday afternoon in an orchard in Padguchi village in Shopian district. The search operation followed “credible input about the presence of militants in the area,” an official said.
During the search operation, militants opened indiscriminate fire to which forces retaliated, resulting in a brief gunfight, the official said.
One of the two militants killed was identified as Rahil Rashid Sheikh of Nunner Ganderbal, an MTech student. A photograph of his appeared on social media claiming that the slain militant signed up with Hizbul Mujahideen on April 3.
The other militant was identified as Bilal Ahmad, resident of Keegam area in district Shopian.
A police spokesperson in a handout said that bodies of two militants were retrieved and their identities and affiliations were being ascertained. “Arms & ammunition have been recovered. A case has been registered,” it added.
Meanwhile, in Ganderbal’s Nunner area, government forces were deployed in the locality where Sheikh lived.
