BUDGAM: Scores of people including men, women and senior citizens Friday staged a protest against continuous water scarcity in Churpora and Aarath villages in Narbal area of Budgam.
Blocking Narbal-Budgam and Soibug road, people raised slogans against the government, urging it to take immediate measures to resolve the issue of water shortage in the area.
They alleged that some water projects were being initiated a year back to provide water only to the area, however, the water was diverted to other villages.
A protestor, Aijaz Ahmad, said that the womenfolk have to travel miles to fetch portable water for the domestic use.
“We never think of drinking second glass of water because of shortage,” he said. “If it isn’t irony than what shall I call this?”.
Hundreds of vehicles were stranded for hours due to the protest, causing difficulty to a large number of commuters.
Tehsildar Narbal, AEE PHE Narbal and other officials visited the spot and assured the protesters that the problem would be solved on a priority basis.
The protesters later dispersed peacefully on official assurances.
