Timber smugglers injure forest official in Shopian

Shopian: Timber smugglers on Thursday attacked forest officials’ team leaving an official injured at Thairen in Keller village of Shopian.

A forest department team led by Mohammed Abdullah Bhat intercepted smugglers carrying timber on horses near Thairen Kandi village of district Shopian during late last night.

When the team tried to stop the smugglers, they were attacked with sharp weapons and left the forest officer Bhat injured seriously. Police has filed a case in this regard.


There is rampant of forest loot in Shopian. The smugglers have wiped out the forests at many places and they have raised apple orchards on the forest land. A local from Keller said that government should come with strict laws to stop the forest loot in the region.
