Shopian: Residents of Wasawhal, Sangran check, Tungdan, Kharwara, Chotigam and its adjacent areas in Watchi constituency of Shopian district are up in arms against the Roads and Building (R&B) Department for failing to macadamise the Wasawhal-Hajipora road for the last 15 years. According to the locals, the road is in shambles and the authorities have turned a blind eye to the problem.
“We have been knocking at the doors of higher officials for the last several years now, but our repeated pleas have gone unheard and their promises have proven to be just hoaxes on the ground,” they said.
“Due to the potholes in the road, public transport has stopped plying here, thereby leaving the residents to walk to all destinations, even during medical emergencies,” said Subzar Ahmad, a local resident.
He said that the condition of the road has not shown any improvement over the past many years and locals, especially students and patients, have to bear the brunt of it all.
“Other roads of the area have been macadmised many a time in the past few years, but this road is being avoided for reasons best known to the authorities,” another local alleged. The local residents have sought the immediate attention of the concerned department and have demanded that repair work be carried out on the stretch immediately. Assistant Executive Engineer Mohammad Hanief said when contacted that the road is certainly in bad condition.
He said that the road is being developed and has been kept in this year’s scheduled plan. Repair work on the road will start soon, he assured.
