Anantnag: A recently elected panchayat member from Katrasoo area of Kulgam district, who was shot at by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday evening, succumbed to his injuries at a Srinagar hospital late Thursday morning.
Abdul Majeed Dar, 50, was a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) activist and had recently dissociated from the party to contest the panchayat elections.
His killing was the first of a recently elected Panchayat member, months after militant groups warned that those who contest the panchayat elections in Kashmir would be killed. Dar was shot at outside his house in Shalipora village of Katrasoo at about 7:45 PM on Wednesday.
A senior police official from Kulgam said that Dar was shot multiple times in his abdomen by the suspected militants.
“He was evacuated to the district hospital from where the doctors referred him to SMHS hospital in Srinagar. He breathed his last this morning at about 11:00 AM,” the police official said.
He said that a case has been registered and police have taken up investigation in this regard.
There has been a spurt in such killings here in south Kashmir since last month. The first such killing was carried out in Pinglena village of Pulwama district, less than two days after the Lok Sabha polls were announced.
A former army trainee was shot dead in Pinglena. Since then, unidentified gunmen have killed more than half a dozen persons in different parts of south Kashmir.
The slain include a policewoman from Vehil area of Shopian district.
