SRINAGAR: The Srinagar parliamentary constituency’s richest candidate is from Sajjad Lone’s People’s Conference and not from National Conference, Peoples’ Democratic Party, Bharatiya Janata Party or the rest of the eight contestants in this election.
People’s Conference parliamentary candidate Irfan Ansari is the richest among the 12 contestants from the city, leaving behind veteran political heavyweight Farooq Abdullah, the state’s three-time chief minister and MP, and former Union minister.
According to the affidavits submitted by the contestants, Irfan’s net worth is more than Rs 67 crore (including both moveable and immoveable assets). He owns nearly 190 Kanals of land, which include 170 agricultural and more than 17 non-agricultural properties at seven different places. He also owns more than seven cars, which include two Mercedes, a Fortuner, a Range Rover and a Land Cruiser, apart from a Harley Davidson motorcycle. His monthly income is more than Rs 50 lakh, which has gone up from Rs 8 lakh per annum in 2013-14. His liabilities are more than Rs 6 crore.
Against him, Farooq Abdullah, whose party, the NC, is likely to win from the city for the 10th time in 13th election, is worth Rs 11.5 crore, which includes Rs 1.5 crore of moveable and more than Rs 10 crore of immoveable assets. He has zero liabilities and owns more than 10 Kanals of land, agricultural as well as non-agricultural. He also owns three cars.
The BJP’s Khalid Jahangir, a 12th class passout who was the head of the government-run corporation in the PDP-BJP coalition government, has declared his assets as being worth more than Rs 2 crore, which include Rs 60 lakh moveable properties and the rest immoveable. He owns four cars, which include a Fortuner and an XUV, and has 13 Kanals of land spread over many places both within and outside the state. After his 12th class, he did a diploma in peace studies from the US when he was in the government. His liability is Rs 38 lakh.
The PDP’s candidate, Aga Syed Mohsin, is worth Rs 1.5 crore, which includes Rs 18 lakh moveable assets while the rest is immoveable. He owns seven Kanals of land. He has no liabilities.
