Sonamarg: The snow clearance operation on 12 kilometres from Gagangeer-Sonamrag stretch of Srinagar-Leh highway has been completed.
The border roads organisation (BRO) officials on Sunday said that the snow clearance operation was started by the officials in the first week of March from Gagangeer to Sonamarg.
They said the road is expected to be thrown open for vehicular traffic by the first week of April if weather allows.
The officials said that the as many as seven snow clearance machines are currently working to clear the road.
“We have cleared the snow for one-way traffic upto Sonamarg while passes will be cleared for two-way traffic till end of this week if weather remained favourable,” they said.
The officials said that no decision has been taken regarding opening of the Sonamarg road yet and it will be decided by the civil administration.
After proper assessment of the conditions, the road would be thrown open, they said.
The road used to remain closed for four to five winter months due to heavy accumulation of snow, slides and avalanches in the area.
The road was closed for vehicular movement in December last year due to bad weather conditions, snowfall and threat of landslides and no vehicle is being allowed to move ahead of Gagangeer 12 kms down to Sonamarag for this period.
