Miraculous’ escape for commuters on Bandipora-Srinagar road after rain sets rocks sliding

BANDIPORA: A couple of commuters on Wednesday said that they “narrowly escaped” death after incessant rains made rocks fall on the Bandipora-Srinagar highway at Sangri near Garoora in Bandipora.
Towheed Sheikh, who was travelling to Srinagar, had a narrow escape after he slowed his vehicle to attend a “miraculous” phone call.
In the meantime,”big stones started to roll down from the hillside” just inches from him. “I stopped the car and closed my eyes after the scary sound subsided, I opened my eyes to find that big rocks very near to my vehicle had blocked the road.”
Thanking God for his miraculous escape, Towheed said in a social media post, “I took a long breath and thanked Allah, who miraculously sent an unknown caller to save my life, had the speed not been slow I wouldn’t be alive.”.
The widening of Bandipora-Srinagar road has been going on for a long time at a snail’s pace. The executing agency, the Roads and Buildings Department, has been criticised for not maintaining safety measures along the road while carrying out the widening works.
