SHOPIAN: A government school teacher from Pulwama and a tehsil president of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI)) in Tral, who had been detained along with scores of Jamaat affiliated workers last month, have been booked under Public Safety Act and shift to Jammu jails.
Families of the two said that PSA against them was unwarranted as they hardly had any cases against them.
Arshid Ahmad Das, a resident of Braw-Bandina village of Pulwama, who works as teacher at a government school in Zainpora was detained by police on February 24, a few days before government banned the JeI. Hundreds of Jamaat workers were rounded up in the week.
“He is working in Education department for last 15 years. An FIR was lodged in 2016 on stone pelting charges and he was suspended for two months but when we proved that he was on Hajj with proofs of documents, air tickets and accommodation receipts, the court rejected the police claims. But recently on 24 February he was summoned by Reshipora police post and detained for many days in Awantipora police station. Then he was moved to police lines Pulwama and now on Monday we came to know he has been shifted to Kot Balwal Jail Jammu, ” Arshid’s brother Tufail Ahmad Das said.
Family members said that they were waiting for his release but were shocked to know that he has been booked and shifted to Jammu jail under PSA.
“There is no case against him. Police blamed him for offering funeral prayers of a militant. He is village Imam, and leads all funeral prayers in the area, what is crime in that?” asked Tufail.
Arshid, according to family, was posted at government higher secondary school in Zainpora area of Shopian.
Family members said that police had told them his detention was ‘preventive’, “but despite that a PSA was slapped on him”.
They added that he was earlier arrested on prime minister’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Arshid is married and has two children studying in 8th and 5th standards, they said.
Another person booked under PSA recently from Pulwama district, Aejaz Ahmad Dar, Tehsil president of JeI for Tral. Aejaz is resident of Noorpora village, and according to family was arrested in a nocturnal raid on his house on February 24. Many persons were detained by forces that day but most of them were released, the family said.
“We were shocked when we heard that he has been shifted to Jammu jail,” Ghulam Muhammad Dar, elder brother of Aejaz said. “There were no cases against him.”
He added that in 2016 Aejaz was summoned by police but released soon.
