SRINAGAR: Muttahida Masjlis-e-Ulema (MMU) – a conglomerate of various religious organisations of Kashmir – has called complete shutdown on Saturday against the summoning of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Umar Farooq by NIA and ban on Jama’at-e-Islami. It also called for protests after Friday prayers.
Addressing a press conference at the historic Mirwaiz Manzil, Rajouri Kadal here, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam condemned the summoning of Mirwaiz and ban on Jama’at-e-Islami and appealed people to observe complete shutdown on Saturday to protest against the moves.
Meanwhile, a statement issued here said Mufti Azam Nasir-ul-Islam chaired an extraordinary meeting of the amalgam regarding the NIA notice sent to the MMU chairman and Mirwaiz of Kashmir Mohammad Umar Farooq.
The meeting held at the Mirwaiz Manzil was participated by imams, khateebs and religious scholars from across the Kashmir Valley.
The meeting discussed the grave prevailing situation in Kashmir especially the “extreme assault” by New Delhi on the pro-resolution leadership, socio-religious organisations and cadres, and a “new wave of repression” on the people of Kashmir.
The meeting concluded with the passing of a unanimous resolution by the MMU.
As per the resolution, the MMU expresses solidarity with Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Mohammad Umar Farooq and assures him that we stand by him at this time when he is being “harassed and victimised” by authorities and would stay shoulder to shoulder with him.
It denounced the NIA notice to Mirwaiz and summoning him to Delhi for questioning as a direct interference in religious affairs of Muslims, making it clear that Mirwaiz is not just a political leader but the religious head of people of Kashmir and any attempt to harass him would be strongly opposed as it will deeply hurt the sentiments and feelings of people across the State.
The resolution strongly condemned the imposition of ban on Jama’at-e-Islami and arrest of its leaders and cadres and termed it a blatant interference in religious affairs. It also condemned the crackdown on the resistance leadership, killings and harassment of people.
It condemned in strongest words the frequent sealing of Kashmir’s Jamia Masjid which is the religious and spiritual epicentre of the lakhs of people of the State. It said barring Friday prayers at Jamia is highly intolerable and that the move amounts to direct interference in religion.
The MMU stressed on all segments of the society to shun sectarian difference and other ideological rifts and stay united at this crucial juncture when there is a “tremendous onslaught” against people. It also urged people to remain alert against the ploys aimed at creating a wedge among the people on sectarian lines and defeat all such moves.
The resolution will be passed during the Friday congregational prayers across Kashmir in all masajids, shrines and imambaras for seeking unanimous support of people of Kashmir against the NIA notice to Mirwaiz, crackdown on Jama’at-e-Islami and banning the organisation, crackdown on Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadith, arrest of resistance leaders and “repressive” measures of Delhi against the people of Kashmir, the MMU statement said.
