SRINAGAR: Residents of Karnah in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district staged a protest demonstration on Tuesday here in Srinagar, demanding construction of the Sadna tunnel at Sadhna pass.
Scores of protesters from Tehsil Karnah assembled here in Press Enclave, chanting slogans such as “We want construction of Sadna tunnel” and “We want justice”.
Sheikh Ghulam Nabi, a retired District Sessions judge from Karnah, said, “We are suffering as our road is closed from the last two months due to snowfall. Three of our people even died recently at Khoni Nallah, near Sadhna Top.
“Presently, the area is living in darkness as we are without electricity. There is also a shortage of essential things and medicines,” he said.
“Every year, we are losing lives of our people at Sadhna Top. We are not demanding jobs from the government, our demand is only the construction of the tunnel,” said Shafiq Ahmad, one of the protesters from Karnah.
“We have a population of more than nearly 90,000 people in the area,” he said.
“After heavy snowfall every year, we are disconnected from the valley for more than five months annually. Life during these five months is full of the hardhsips which people are facing, particularly in winters,” he added.
The protesters requested both the state and central government to look into the matter and construct the Sadna tunnel at the earliest.
