BRO starts snow clearance on Sonamarg road

Sonamarg: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Tuesday began snow clearance operation on Sonamarg Road from Gagangir (12-km).
Officials said that the Gagangir-Sonamarg stretch on the Srinagar-Leh highway is closed every year in December following heavy snowfall.
The BRO, responsible for the maintenance of the highway, have pressed into service snow cutters and clearing machines.
Hung pass on Sonamarg road, which experiences heavy snowfall, is considered to the most difficult and avalanche prone terrain where five to six feet of snow has accumulated along the road.
Glacier and avalanche points on the highway are another threat to the workers.
Subodh Kumar, Captain BRO told Kashmir Reader that the clearance upto Sonamarg would take upto two weeks.
The next step would be to clear a stretch of about 30km-Zojila Pass of the Srinagar-Leh highway he said.
