Civilian killed in clashes at gunfight site
Baramulla: A CRPF officer was among four government forces personnel killed in north Kashmir’s Handwara in a gunfight between government forces and militants on Friday. A civilian was also killed during clashes that erupted around the encounter site.
According to an official, a CRPF inspector and three others were injured in the gunfight at Babagund Langate area of Handwara in Kupwara. The encounter between government forces and militants broke out on Thursday night after massive searches were carried out in the village.
While the firefight continued since last night, however, there was lull in daytime apparently after both the militants were presumed dead. A joint search team of police, CRPF and army moved towards the damaged house where militants were holed up for retrieving their bodies. But a “dead” militant emerged from the debris and indiscriminately fired on forces resulting in injury to a CRPF officer, policemen and five government forces personnel who were removed to hospital. However, the CRPF inspector Pintoo of 92 bn CRPF and two policemen and a trooper succumbed to their injuries, it was learnt.
Amid the gunfight, protests broke out between youth and forces around the site in which a civilian Waseem Ahmad Mir of Sagipora Handwara was killed.
Medical Superintendent District Hospital Handwara Dr Ajaz confirmed the killing of civilian saying Mir had bullet injury and arrived dead to hospital.
A police spokesperson said that during searches hiding militants fired indiscriminately on the search party.
In the process, two police personnel, two CRPF personnel and one individual sustained critical injuries and succumbed. The slain policemen and CRPF soldiers have been identified as Naseer Ahmad Kholi, Ghulam Mustafa Barah, Inspector Pintu and constable Vinod.
“In the nearby area one individual identified as Waseem Ahmad Mir also sustained bullet injury consequently succumbed at the hospital,” it said.
