Srinagar: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has called for a report from Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pulwama over the killing of a civilian during an gunfight in Pingalan village of the district on February 18.
The Commission chairperson Justice (Rtd) Bilal Nazki Thursday issued notices to the two officials asking for the report on the killing of Mushtaq Ahmed Sofi of Pingalan, Pulwama, during a 17-hour-long gunfight between government forces and militants.
A petition in the commission said that the 46-year-old Mushtaq was the sole earning hand of the family and it was necessary to find out how he got killed.
The petition also demanded compensation to the kin of the deceased and a thorough probe into the killing.
Four soldiers including a major and three Jaish militants were also killed in the gunfight.
Residential houses belonging to Muhammad Abdullah Hajam, Muhammad Yousuf Hajam, Ali Muhammad Bhat, Abdul Gani Ganai and Mushtaq Ahmed were also destroyed.
The petitioner pleaded for compensation to the owners of damaged houses.
