Kangan boy mauled by stray dogs

Kangan: A 13-year-old boy was mauled and left severely injured by stray dogs in Kijpora area of Kangan in Ganderbal district Tuesday evening.
Eyewitness said that the incident took place on Srinagar-Leh road at Sheikh Bagh in Kangan town as a pack of stray dogs attacked the boy identified as Haroon Rashid Sheikh, son of Abdul Rashid Sheikh. He was returning from a coaching centre at Kangan.
They said cries of the teenager caught the attention of passers by who intervened to rescue him from but in a pool of blood.
The boy was rushed to a Truama Hospital Kangan wherefrom he was referred to SKIMS Soura.
The family members and locals held the district administration responsible for increasing population of stray dogs in the area, and for not taking any stringent measures.
“There is a dire need for authorities to step up and take actions so that the innocent kids can be saved,” a family member told said.
Locals said the dog attacks have increased in the area over couple of months, while the administration was not doing enough to resolve the issue. The children, they said, are badly in risk.
The latest incident has frightened the villagers, who are now afraid of sending their wards to schools.
SDM Kangan Masrat Hashim said that financial assistance to the injured would be processed under Red Cross Fund.
He said people are requested not to throw food waste in the open.
“We too have plans of dumping site in the area under SBM and RDD needs to expedite it” he said.
