Srinagar: The resistance camp on Tuesday condoled the demise of Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Bashir-ud-din Ahmad.
Those who expressed grief included- Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik and Democratic Freedom Party (DFP).
Mirwaiz in a statement said: People of Kashmir will always remember his service in the field of Islamic jurisprudence and his contribution to the social and political sphere of the valley.
In his message of condolence to the Mufti family, Mirwaiz said that Mufti Bashir shared a close bond with Mirwaiz family. “Grand Mufti infused new energy in two important institutions-Darul Iftah and Darul Qaza and had always been on the forefront to serve the people through these institutions to the best of his capability. With the death of Grand Mufti, an era has ended,” he said.
Terming the death of Grand Mufti as a personal loss, Mirwaiz said that the Mufti has had close relations with the founder of Awami Action Committe Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. “He (Mufti) also served as the General Secretary of AAC, and during that time was also imprisoned for supporting the movement for the right to self-determination.”
JKLF chief Yasin Malik along with a delegation visited the residence of Grand Mufti, met with the bereaved family and expressed condolences to them, the statement said.
Terming Mufti as an iconic Islamic scholar and social figure, JKLF chairman said that his efforts for social harmony and spreading Islam will be always remembered.
Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) in a statement said that by passing away of Mufti Bashir, the state has suffered a huge loss which is very hard to compensate.
The spokesperson said that Mufti Bashir had a very close relationship with the DFP incarcerated chief, Shabir Shah “who had great respect for the deceased”.
