SRINAGAR: The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Bashiruddin Ahmad, died on Tuesday at the age of 82. He was hospitalised in Srinagar on Monday evening after he complained of chest pain. He breathed his last at the hospital at about 3am in the night, his family said.
Ahmad was the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir for more than three decades. He had a masters degree in Arabic and a law degree from Aligarh Muslim University before pursuing religious education.
The funeral prayers for the Grand Mufti were held in the afternoon at Khanqah-e-Mo’alla in the old city and were attended by people from different walks of life. Ahmad’s son, Mufti Nasir-ul Islam, is likely to succeed his father as the Grand Mufti of the state. He also led his father’s funeral prayers which wwere attended by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
Ahmad’s death has been widely mourned with political leaders sending condolence messages.
