Kashmir highway shut, 10 people missing as avalanche hits Jawahar Tunnel

Srinagar: Ten people have been reported missing after an avalanche hit Kashmir highway also forcing the closure of the road for third consecutive day Friday.

Reports said that the avalanche hit a police post near the Jawahar Tunnel on Thursday evening. Six policemen, two fire service personnel and two prisoners were buried in the avalanche and a rescue operation is going on to trace them.

They said that the traffic will not be allowed on the highway as multiple avalanches have hit the highway at Banihal and landslides in Ramsoo and Ramban areas.

The reports said that the clearance operation was hampered due to bad weather and will start again once the weather improves.
