Kangan: The residents of Margund in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Saturday blocked Srinagar-Leh highway to protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) for ‘failing’ to repair power transformers in the area.
The protestors, including women and children, blocked Srinagar-Leh highway, hampering the traffic movement on the busy highway.
“Our areas are reeling under darkness as PDD failed to repair the transformer damaged a month ago. We are facing a lot of difficulties due to unavailability of electricity in this harsh winter,” the protesters said.
They said the transformers suffered damages 10 times within a month.
“The 100 KV transformers installed in two Mohallas receive technical snags frequently as they fail to bear the load of all the households in the areas,” they said.
They said their repeated pleas of installing 250 KV transformer in the area are being ignored forcing them to come on roads to register their protest.
Meanwhile, police and civil administration reached on the spot and assured the protesters that their demands would be looked into soon.
