SHOPIAN: Suspected militants on Sunday evening carried out a standoff attack on army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles camp at Ahgam village in Shopian district.
The attack was carried out at around 6.45pm when heavy gunshots were heard in the area. The exchange of gunfire between suspected militants and army troops created panic in the area. Those who were out of their houses rushed towards safety. Locals said that the firing continued for five minutes.
Shopian police said that it was stray firing from a distance on the camp. “Stray firing from a distance on 44 RR Camp at Ahgam. Alert sentry retaliated. There was no loss of life and property. Area has been under cordon and search is going on,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Shopian, Sandeep Choudary said.
Srinagar-based spokesman of Indian Army in a statement said, “Ineffective Stand Off fire towards Ahagom COB , 44 RR at 1845h. Same retaliated. No injuries to own troops.”
