Sopore: To mark the 26nd anniversary of Sopore massacre, a complete shutdown is being observed in north Kashmir’s Sopore and its adjoining areas on Sunday.

This day in 1993, BSF men fired indiscriminately in Sopore market and set ablaze shops and houses charring civilians to death. 57 civilians were killed and property worth crores gutted in fire.

All shops and business establishments are closed and a thin movement of traffic is visible on roads in the town.

Reports said that police and CRPF soldiers armed with weapons are deployed in strength in the town to prevent eruption of protests.

Last year four policemen were killed on the Sopore anniversary after militants planted IED  in the market aimed at ‘avenging’ killing of its top commander by forces.
