SRINAGAR: Authorities at Government College for Women, M A road in Srinagar are providing “unhygienic” food and “inadequate” heating arrangements in the ongoing winter to the student hostellers at the institution.
Besides the students of the institution, girl students of women’s college, Nawakadal are also staying in the hostel of the institution.
Scores of hostel boarding students told Kashmir Reader that they were being provided “dirty” and “unhygienic” food at the hostels.
A student said that a few weeks ago, they found an insect in the cooked food provided to them at the hostel.
“But when we showed the picture of the food to the warden, she reprimanded us instead and warned us not to disclose it to anybody,” a student said.
She said that several students have been complaining of late about the “unhygienic food” at the hostels.
Many hostellers said that the college has failed to put in place adequate heating facilities at the hostel rooms.
A teacher at the college told Kashmir Reader that many students approached them over the unhygienic food provided to them at the hostels.
While Principal Women’s College M A Road was not available for comments, Convener of the hostels at the college, Rubeena Jabeen said that they will look into the complaints.
“We regularly check the food provided to the students. Still, I will look into the matter,” Jabeen said.
Over the “inadequate” heating facilities at the hostels, Jabeen said that they had allowed the students to “take their heating gadgets inside the rooms”, although “we have not officially approved it”.
“We have allowed them to use electric blankets and water bottles. As you know that our colleges will close for winters and the students would be at their homes,” she added.
Jabeen said that there was no central heating system at the college.
She said that they regularly inspect hostel rooms and the facilities being provided to the students there.
