Sopore: A gunfight broke out between government forces and militants in Brath village of Sopore Wednesday evening after a team of government forces including army’s 22RR, SOG of police, and paramilitary CRPF launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO).
Sources said that a CASO was launched in Brath village in the afternoon but it ended peacefully after searches of several houses yielded no trace of militants. In the evening, however, government forces again reached the village and cordoned off Gund Mohalla locality of the village. The forces announced that a cordon had been laid and civilians were advised to come out of their homes.
Sources told Kashmir Reader that most of the families living in Gund Mohalla came out of their houses after which searches were started.
The forces have installed lights and a generator in the locality for their operation, local sources said. They said that the forces told them that there were a few militants hiding in some residential houses.
Late in the evening, a police spokesperson said that a gunfight had started between both sides. Locals, however, said that firing came only from one side. They said that the army fired dozens of rounds towards a suspected spot but received no answer.
The CASO was still on when this report was filed. The authorities had suspended internet services across Sopore town.
