Sopore: During the cordon and search operation in Sopore’s Brath village on Wednesday evening, militants fired upon government forces trigging a gunfight.

Internet services have been suspended in the area.

A police spokesperson confirmed that militants and forces exchanged fire saying, “Exchange of fire between #Terrorists & Security forces at Brath Kalan #Sopore. Area is under cordon”.

In the evening,  forces including army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles, SOG of police and CRPF launched a Cordon And Search Operation (CASO) in Brath village in Sopore on Wednesday evening to carry house-to-house searches.

The CASO was launched after forces got specific information about presence of some militants.

Sources said that CASO was launched in the village in the afternoon. However it ended peacefully after searches of several houses were carried.

In the evening, forces again reached the village and cordoned off Gund Mohalla of the village and announced that area was cordoned off. Residents said civilians were advised to come out from their houses and that most of the families came out from their houses and searches have been started.

Forces installed lights in the neighbourhood to carry search.

The CASO was underway when this report was filed.
